This Vintage Henry Browne & Son Sestrel Binnacle and Compass is in great shape! It is a full-sized wooden binnacle, with a brass compass. Both the binnacle and compass are marked with “Sestrel and Henry Browne & Son”.
Henry Browne & Son Ltd dates back to the 1920s. They became a well know English instrument maker that produced high-end compasses, ship clocks, inclinometers, sextants, and chandlery.
The model name “Sestrel” was created by taking the first two letters of “sensitive”, the first two letters of “steady”, and the first three letters of “reliable”.
The magnetic compass is a fundamental requirement of every ship as it can function independently of satellite reception and electrical supply. The Compass is mounted to the pedestal with a gimbaled bracket. This is an original Sestrel “Deadbeat” liquid-filled magnetic compass. The “Dead Beat“ compass design is well dampened and serves to reduce oscillations.
