This vintage Lilley & Gillie clinometer comes from North Shields, England. It measures the angle of tilt, elevation, or depression relative to gravity. People also call it a tiltmeter, level gauge, or gradiometer.
Marine and aviation crews used clinometers to track balance and positioning. This piece is made from black-painted brass and shows light wear from use. You can see minor surface marks that reflect its age.

History of the Company
John Lilley founded John Lilley and Son in London in 1812. He produced optical goods and nautical instruments. In 1885, John Wilson Gillie started Wilson & Gillie in North Shields. He focused on charts, magnetic compasses, and marine instruments.
The companies merged in 1913. They renamed the business John Lilley & Gillie Ltd. in 1943. The company still produces nautical instruments today.
