A/S Svendborg Skibsværft Brass Steering Station

This listing is for an A/S Svendborg Skibsværft Brass Steering Station that we acquired from a private collector in Canada. Skibsværft means shipyard in Danish – which means that this hydraulic steering station was manufactured in Denmark at the Svendborg shipyard (in Svendborg). The plate has scratches on the front of it and despite saying 1937, I do believe that refers to the serial number of the item. This company was around from 1907-70s, and it is likely from the earlier part of the 20th century, rather than the latter. The design is unique, with a brass steering station and a wooden wheel that doesn’t have handles. The reason for this was when the ship made hard turns or hit turbulence, the wheel could spin wildly and could break a sailors hands if the handles hit.  The Svendborg shipyard was known for producing small yachts for consumers.
