P15-23 is a Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Company Gravity Tank Gauge that was manufactured in Chester, PA. This was made with the patent that Ashcroft USA established many years prior.
The housing on this piece is brass. The main housing measures about 7.5 inches wide. The mounting frame on the back measures 7.5 inches wide and has three mounting holes. The glass on the top of the dial measures about 5.5 inches wide. This weighs 6.5 pounds. When mounted to the wall, this pressure gauge will extend out from the mounting surface by about 2.25 inches.
The face of the gauge has several inscriptions. These read “SUN SHIPBUILDING & DRY DOCK CO. CHESTER, PA. U.S.A.”, “L.O. GRAVITY TANK PORT”, “GALLONS”, and “ASHCROFT U.S.A”. The Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Company was located on the Delaware river in Chester, Pennsylvania from 1917-1989. By World War II they were in the top 5 largest shipyard. During the war they primarily built T2 Tankers but also built hospital ships, cargo ships, and escort carriers for the United Stated Maritime Commission.
