The ‘Benjamin F. Fairless’ was a Great Lakes bulk freighter ship used for transporting steel around the Great Lakes. It was built in Lorain, OH by the American Ship Building Co. and was put to work by the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. in 1942. The ship was named after Benjamin Fairless, who was an influential executive in the American steel industry. During the period of time when this ship was built, Fairless was serving as the CEO of U.S. Steel, which is the largest steel company in the United States. It measures about 32 inches wide by about 3 inches thick and weighs 3.9 pounds. The back side does not have lettering.
