From post lights to portholes, Big Ship Salvage carries a lot of the items you’d expect when you’re looking for authentic nautical antiques. But we also keep an ever-changing inventory of other types of maritime antiques that have been salvaged from cruise ships, fishing boats and more.

Some of our usual offerings include vintage nautical signs, air horns, rope ladders, water door wheels, pressure gauges and rope fenders. We often carry antiques such as vintage ship fire alarms with shiny brass bells, wall-mounted ship telephones, ship propellers, flagpoles, and gorgeous glass fishing net floats in blue, red, teal green or other vibrant colors.

Not all of our maritime antiques were strictly business, though. We often carry cruise ship items such as ashtrays, sterling silver souvenir spoons and sugar sifter spoons from cruise lines and ships that made their last voyage long ago.

Nautical antiques add interest and a coastal feel to your home’s decor and serve as attractive, interesting conversation starters. You might want to visit our selection often — you could find anything from a signal cannon to a brass ship’s bell, and so much more! Take a look and find something unique for your own collection of maritime antiques.

Big Eye Binoculars – USS Forrestal

    Price: $18,000.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of the big eye binoculars – USS Forrestal salvage.

Once in a life time opportunity to own a set of big eye binoculars salvaged from the USS Forrestal. The USS Forrestal was commissioned in 1955. While the USS Forrestal was a very historical US Navy vessel, it became better known for an accident that happened on the flight deck during the Vietnam War. In July 1967, an electrical error on one aircraft resulted in the discharge of a Zuni rocket that claimed the lives of 134 sailors. US Senator John McCain was one of the pilots in line to take off at the time of the accident. His aircraft was burned on the deck after he exited the cockpit.

The USS Forrestal was scrapped in December 2015. Before it was scrapped, we were able to salvage this set of binoculars from the deck of the vessel. These binoculars were made by Optic Electronic Corporation in Dallas, Texas. According to the decal on the side housing, this set was last overhauled May 10, 2012 by the Ship Repair Facility Japan Regional Maintenance Center, Yokosuka, Japan.

The attached photos were taken with the height adjuster in the lowest position of just about 5 feet tall. Cranked fully up, they will stand just over 6 feet tall. The binoculars are 27 inches long and about 16 inches wide. The base is a two part system. The very bottom of the base has a 12 inch wide base that mounted to the deck. About 30 inches up from where it mounted to the deck, you see four bolts. These bolts hold the two sections of the base together. The top section (the cradle and crank up assembly) are about 26 inches tall. The actual binoculars are attached to the cradle with two mechanical bolts with big black knobs on them. The total weight as shown is about 300 pounds.

The binoculars spin 360 degrees on the original base, and will tilt up and down. The original hand locks work that allow the binoculars to be locked into almost any position. As shown in the photos, the binoculars are being sold just as they were found on the deck of the ship before it was cut up for scrap. The lower section of the original base is made of iron and has some surface rust. The top section of the base is mostly aluminum and has most of the original paint. The actual binoculars housing is aluminum with some of the hardware being brass. The binoculars have most of the original paint with some surface wear.

Working Condition:  The binoculars have a clear field of vision. I am able to focus and see items at a great distance very clearly. These are 20 power binoculars, so I am not sure to true distance they were made for. The binocular housing has as parts that have casting dates of 1983. It is safe to assume these were not the first big eye binoculars installed on the deck of the USS Forrestal, but they were the ones in place when the vessel was decommissioned.

I can safely crate and ship these big eye binoculars. The listed price includes shipping and insurance to any address within the continental United States. I strongly encourage you to come and pickup this historical piece at our South Carolina warehouse. We will discount the price by $500 if you are doing a local pickup that does not require us to ship and crate.

    Maryland Dry Dock Company Ashtray

    Price: $65.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this Maryland Dry Dock Company ashtray.

This is a Maryland Dry Dock Company ashtray that measures 5 inches wide and is made of polished cast brass material. Even if you do not smoke, it makes a great nautical item for your desk. It can be used to hold paper clips or other items. I have to assume this was a promotional item that sales reps gave to people when they were looking to have some work done at the Baltimore yard.

The Maryland Dry Dock Company was a shipbuilding company that operated in Baltimore, Maryland during the 20th century.

The company started life in 1920 as the Globe Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Maryland. Its President at this time was B. C. Cooke. The company bought land along the Patapsco River across the bay from Fort McHenry.  It later changed its name to the simpler “Maryland Dry Dock Company”. Sometime after 1950, its name was changed again, to the Maryland Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.

The Maryland Dry Dock Company specialized in ship conversions, upgrades and repairs rather than with shipbuilding per se. During World War II, the company was employed in the conversion of numerous warships built at other yards for the US war effort. Unlike many other shipbuilding companies of the period, it survived the postwar downturn in the shipbuilding industry.

In 1970, the company’s yard in Baltimore was purchased by the manufacturer of Fruehauf trailers which spent $30 million upgrading the site. Unfortunately, adverse economic conditions caused the yard to close in 1984 and much of the site was razed, although one dry dock was preserved and was being used by Kurt Metal for the scrapping of old ships in 1995.

You will be shipped the Maryland Dry Dock Company ashtray shown in the photos.

    Vintage Wood Key Cabinet

    Price: $95.00

This old wood key cabinet is a nice find we recently picked up.  It measures about 16 1/4 inches wide x 25 1/4 inches long and is 2 1/2 inches deep.

The weight of this wood key cabinet is just under 14 1/2 pounds.

The door is hinged and snaps shut securely.  The cabinet will lock but the key is long gone.  The width of this cabinet when the door is fully opened measures 32 1/2 inches.  There are a number of hooks inside the cabinet for hanging keys, or you might want to get creative and use this cabinet for some other small treasures.

This cabinet has some surface wear, so it’s a good assumption it was used somewhere.  The hooks on the inside of the cabinet have some rust on them.  It would be a great vintage nautical décor item in your home or office.

    1949 Sculler Lifesaving Gun

    Price: $2,000.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this 1949 Sculler Lifesaving Gun.

This is an authentic 1949 Sculler Lifesaving Gun. Most of us would really call this a cannon or sorts, but it is really called a gun. The black barrel measures about 28 inches long with the small end measuring 3 5/8 inches wide. I think most of you reading this know more about it than I do, but I will point out a few items you need to know. This gun is missing the firing mechanism that screwed into the breach hole. The original pin that holds the barrel at the desired angle is missing, and has been replaced with a 1/2 inch piece of standard rebar. The inside of the barrel has surface rust. Not that I think you should every fire this devise, but I am sure the surface rust inside the barrel would be greatly reduced if fired once.

For those of you that still are not sure what this item is, or what it was used for, I will share some knowledge. This is a lifesaving devise that would fire a metal slug that was attached to a rope. It would be fired over a sinking vessel with a small rope attached. The smaller rope was used to pull over a larger rope. The large rope would allow a basket to slide people from the sinking vessel to safety. Yes, there is a lot more to it, but I think you get the point.

This historical item came from the estate of Leroy Sayers. I have enjoyed it for a few years, now it is time for someone else to enjoy it!

Buyers that can do local pickup at our South Carolina warehouse will receive a $300 discount on this item!

    Vintage Wooden Speed Boat Model

    Price: $125.00

Click on the photo to see additional photos of this Vintage Wooden Speed Boat Model.

I found this cool 1950’s vintage wooden speed boat model at a central Florida flea market. I am sure you are attracted to it for the same reasons I am. Just think, someone put hours of time into crafting this model. I am not sure if it is a kit model, or a scratch built model. I want to think it had to be a kit built model, but some parts of it have just enough signs to make me think someone built this one from scratch. Either way, this 20 inch long boat will make a great display piece on that shelf in your nautical themed room. The wood body is 7 1/2 inches wide. This vintage speed boat model will likely never race across the water again, but most collectors would be proud to display this within their collection.

The gas motor has no maker’s mark, but it is about the size of a Cox model airplane motor. Under the back seat you may see a bar extending out past the edge. This bar would control the rudder that would determine if the boat would run in a circle, or a straight line. The rudder on the bottom of the boat is missing, but the shaft is in place.

The construction of this model is mostly wood!

Vintage Model Ship in a Bottle

    Price: $75.00 $59.99

Click on the photo to see additional views of this model ship in a bottle.

Here is a vintage model ship in a bottle.  The glass bottle measures 9 inches long and is 4 1/2 X 4 1/4 inches at the base. The model maritime ship vessel has three masts and is about 7 inches long and 3 1/2 inches tall. The hand painted back drop shows a village with four large buildings and trees. While not dated, I would say this item dates to the 1940’s. Glass bottle is undamaged.

I would not call this a complicated project, but someone put some time, effort, and skill into this finished piece. I am sure this is not a model kit, but more of a project where someone hand crafted the parts from scratch. A vintage model ship in a bottle can range in price and size. Most collectors find a ship model in a bottle that costs less than a hundred dollars, but I have seen more advanced projects run into the thousands of dollars.

This model ship in a bottle is a very unusual, simple looking piece.  It’s the perfect finishing touch for your nautical décor.

We are constantly adding new inventory to our site. Our inventory includes a great selection of authentic brass nautical lighting, lifeboat rings, compasses, artwork, and other great nautical treasures.

Fathometer made by The Submarine Signal Company Of Boston

    Price: $395.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this Fathometer that was built by The Submarine Signal Company Of Boston.

I am sure that most people reading my description of this fathometer know more about it than I do. In 1925, the Submarine Signal Company of Boston developed the first fathometer, known as the 312 fathometer, to chart the depth of water while a ship was moving. The fathometer proved more precise and easier to use than previous sounding methods, making it a vital tool for surveying the oceans.

This devise built by the Submarine Signal Company Of Boston measures 16 X 16 inches and extends out from the mounting surface by about 9 inches. It is being sold in as found condition, and has not been cleaned or tested in any way. The weight of this fathometer is 60 pounds.

We do not know the vessel name that this fathometer was removed from, but we do know that this fathometer was on display at the Jacksonville Maritime Museum until it closed in December 2015.

This would make a great addition to any collection as they are just not easy to come by today. This item can be mounted directly to a wall and will make a great display that will surly spark many conversations about it’s use and possible history.

Do not worry about the shipping of such a large and heavy piece of history, our price includes free shipping to any address here on the main land of the US. We ship all of our items via FedEx Ground and we include insurance.

Big Ship Salvage is a supplier to many different movie set designers and interior design companies looking for that hard to find real nautical piece. Why not shop were the pros shop, our inventory is ready to ship today, just call us at 574-870-1571.

    Red Blown Glass Rum Jug

    Price: $74.99

Click on the photo for additional views of this red blown glass rum jug.

This is a heavy duty hand blown glass rum jug. Not counting the rope handle, it measures about 17 inches tall, and about 9 inches wide. Weighs about 10 pounds. No cracks or chips. The color is deep red.  The blown glass rum jug has a knotted rope cover.

The art of hand knotting rope around bottle or jugs like this is long gone these days. The rope served a needed purpose as it prevented each blown glass rum jug from breaking.  A blown glass rum jug as this can be used as a lamp base, holding small treasures like seashells, or just simply a door stop.  The possibilities are endless.  These jugs we offer are less than 20 years old, but they provide a look from years past. We keep a few of them on the front of the warehouse to add to our nautical theme.

    Porcelain Danger Electric Pressure Sign

    Price: $49.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this porcelain Danger Electric Pressure sign.

We salvaged this cool looking porcelain Danger Electric Pressure sign from the engine room of an abandoned vessel at the Alang, India shipbreaking yard. The writing on the lower right hand corner of the sign is Hindi. Typically these warnings are stencil painted onto the door, but from time to time we find these little porcelain signs and they have become highly collectable because they are considered porcelain advertising.

This porcelain Danger Electric Pressure sign measures 6 inches by 6 inches. It is single sided. When we describe the sign as “porcelain”, it means the sign has a porcelain finish on a steel plate.

Are you ready to place an order? The process is easy, just give us a call at 574-870-1571 or you can e-mail us and we will return with a phone call to get your order.

Each year the salvage crews at Big Ship Salvage work on many different projects to recover the items here on our site. Our items ultimately end up at our Pauline, South Carolina warehouse operation where they get the final cleaning and polishing.

Did you know Big Ship Salvage supplied brass lights for the bat cave in “The Dark Knight Rises” and portholes for the “SpongeBob Squarepants – Out of Water” movies? We also supplied lights to the TNT series “The Last Ship”, and NBC’s “The Black List”.  We also worked with Guy Harvey when they rebuilt the Outpost Resort in the Bahamas.

    Authentic Nautical Air Scoop

    Price: $175.00

Click on the photo for additional views of this authentic nautical air scoop.

This authentic nautical air scoop was salvaged from a derelict fishing vessel in a Virginia boatyard. The air scoops are being sold in as found condition, nothing has been done to restore or clean them. From the ground up, they measure 24 inches tall. The top opening is 10 1/2 inches wide. The mounting base is 11 inches wide and has 7 mount holes. The weight is 22 pounds.  Made of iron.

Originally, the vent could spin 360 degrees on the base mount by loosening a thumb screw near the bottom of the vent. Currently, the thumb screw is rusted in place and prevents the vent from turning on the base. With some time and effort you could once again make the vent turn on the base.

You can expect the original surfaces to have minor rust and some loose or flaking paint. The patina look is what caught my attention and I am sure it will add a very desirable nautical look to your décor.

winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in (wind up) or let out (wind out) or otherwise adjust the “tension” of a rope or wire rope (also called “cable” or “wire cable”). In its simplest form it consists of a spool and attached hand crank. In larger forms, winches stand at the heart of machines as diverse as tow trucks, steam shovels and elevators. The spool can also be called the winch drum. More elaborate designs have gear assemblies and can be powered by electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or internal combustion drives. Some may include a solenoid brake and/or a mechanical brake or ratchet and pawl device that prevents it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.

Note: Both winches were cut off the deck of the boat and have the wood attached.

    Salvaged De Wit Pressure Gauge

    Price: $49.99

Click on the photo to see additional views of the salvaged De Wit pressure gauge.

Here we have a fine example of a salvaged De Wit maritime pressure gauge for sale.  Found in a spare parts room of a vessel destined for scrap.  It looks as though it had been sitting on a shelf for years but never installed!!

This salvaged De Wit nautical pressure gauge looks like it could have measured positive pressure on one side and vacuum pressure on the other side but I’m not sure. The undamaged glass on the top side of the dial measures 5 1/4 inches in diameter with the main housing measuring 5 3/4 inches in diameter. The back of the pressure gauge has a mounting frame that measures 7 inches wide and has three mounting holes. The connection point for the source being measured is made of brass and still has the plastic thread protector cover in place. When mounted to the wall, this salvaged De Wit pressure gauge will extend out from the mounting surface by about 2 inches. The main housing of this gauge is iron, and it looks to have a high end painted finish.

This pressure gauge was made by “De Wit” in the Netherlands.  This company has been around since 1916 and is the leader in offshore testing and weather monitoring equipment.  I am not sure what application this gauge would have been used for on the vessel, but it looks like it could have been used for a wide range of equipment testing.

A salvaged De Wit pressure gauge such as this one makes a great nautical display item in your home, office, or restaurant.  It would also make a great component for the steampunk artists.

    Authentic Brass Ship Propeller

    Price: $125.00

Click on the photo for additional views of this authentic brass ship propeller.

An authentic brass ship propeller is always a great find, especially if it is in brass.  This one is solid brass and measures about 16 inches from the tip of one blade to the opposite one.  And it measures  about 8 3/4 inches from the center of the hub to the edges of the blades. The hub is 2 inches in diameter.  This authentic brass ship propeller weighs a little over 10 pounds.  We have not found any marks to identify its maker.

Note: The blades are lightly chipped (see photos).

Simply speaking, a maritime propeller is made up of sections of helicoidal surfaces which act together ‘screwing’ through the water (hence the common reference to marine propellers as “screws”). Three, four, or five blades are most common in marine propellers, although designs which are intended to operate at reduced noise will have more blades. The blades are attached to a boss, or hub, which should be as small as the needs of strength allow – with fixed-pitch propellers the blades and boss are usually a single casting.

We have a few other ship propellers in stock – just scroll up or down to view them!  Placing an order is easy.  You can call us directly at 574-870-1571, or send us an email via the “Contact Us” button and we will get right back to you.  Items are in our warehouse ready to ship, so no long wait for your order to arrive!

    Original Watertight Door Wheel

    Price: $30.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this original watertight door wheel

Often times we see watertight doors and hatches at the shipyards and we walk past then because the of the overall size and weight. I always thought the coolest part of these original watertight doors and hatches was the cast iron wheel, so I started pulling them when we spotted ones that could be removed without too much effort.

This original watertight door wheel measures about 8 3/4 inches wide and weighs about 5.8 pounds. This item is being sold in as pound condition. You can expect loose paint, dirt, and some grease here and there. This is a great display piece that can be displayed unrestored, or you can make it a project and clean it up and paint it.

You will be shipped the original watertight door wheel shown in the attached photos!

Vintage Propeller Style Wind Gauge Anemometer

    Price: $695.00 $550.00

Click on the photo for additional views of this wind gauge anemometer.

This is an antiques maritime wind gauge anemometer with a nautical propeller that was salvaged from a vessel destined to be cut up for scrap at one of the shipbreaking yards. The propeller for sale is aluminum, the tail cone is fiber, and most of the rest of the unit is brass. The aluminum propeller has four blades and measures 13 1/2 inches tip to tip. From the ground to the top of the tail this wind gauge anemometer measures 30 inches tall. From the front tip to the back of the tail it measures 27 inches. The base mount is 6 inches wide with 5 mount holes. The propeller turns freely. The unit spins 360 degrees on the mount pipe.  This wind gauge anemometer weighs about 35 pounds.

By definition, a windmill anemometer is similar to its namesake, the windmill, in that it must be parallel to the direction of the wind in order to work properly. A wind vane, attached to the tail of the anemometer, is pushed around until the propeller is facing into the wind. The wind then turns the propeller, which rotates a mechanism that calculates the wind speed.

We have not determined if this wind gauge anemometer works or not, but regardless, it will make a unique display item in your home or outside in your yard or garden area.

You will be shipped the vintage wind gauge anemometer shown in the photos.

    RARE Fresnel Lighthouse Lens

    Price: $15,000.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this awesome Fresnel lighthouse lens.

*****LOCAL PICK UP ONLY ON THIS ITEM****

This Fresnel lighthouse lens is a rare find, and it is unlikely you will find another one like it for sale! This is a single panel Fresnel lighthouse lens from an unknown Great Lakes lighthouse. It was made in 1933 by American Gas Accumulator Company in Elizabeth New Jersey. The Serial Number is #501. The glass was supplied by supplied by BBT – France.

This antiques maritime item measures just over 36 inches tall and about 21 inches wide. The brass housing and the glass weigh just over 140 pounds. This Fresnel lighthouse lens is being sold in as found condition and is not considered to be in mint condition.  Some of the glass prisms have notable chips and other damage. All of the prisms are glass and none are made of the replacement acrylic material used in modern time to restore the prisms. It is clear that some of the white compound normally found to support the glass position in the brass frame has been replaced with some sort of clear silicone caulk. I was told the center glass is not original to the lens, but may have been installed to make a better display at some point.

This Fresnel lighthouse lens is a very historical piece and I will not ship, pack, or crate it. We ask that the new owner pick up and transport from our Pauline, South Carolina warehouse. If you choose to hire a professional moving company, you accept full responsibility of the mover you select.

Aluminum and Brass Lifeboat Alarm Bell

    Price: $265.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this lifeboat alarm bell.

Recently salvaged is this vintage brass and polished aluminum antiques maritime lifeboat alarm bell for sale.  It measures about 15 inches tall with the brass bell being 7 inches in diameter.  The lower aluminum housing has three mounting legs that will require a mounting surface about 4 inches wide and about 8 inches tall.  This lifeboat alarm bell weighs about 9 pounds.

This type of nautical lifeboat alarm bell actually would have been on the ship – when the alarm sounded you were to head to the nearest lifeboat, as there may be a fire onboard.

For those of you that want know how it works, I have included a close up shot with the lower housing cover removed.  First, notice how clean the mechanical parts are. We never cleaned this section of the lifeboat alarm bell.  As you can also see, no wiring instructions or wiring diagrams were found.  I have had many alarm bells like this and they are Russian made and normally operate on 24 volts DC.  I could be wrong about the DC part, but 100% sure on the 24 volts.  Based on a quick visual inspection, I can’t see why this lifeboat alarm bell would not work if it had the correct power, but the working condition has not been verified.

Several pieces of this lifeboat alarm bell in stock.  You will be shipped one that looks like the one shown in the photos.
