Although permit are found close to shore and even in some brackish areas, they spawn offshore. Young are found usually in the surf zone where plenty of small invertebrates are available for them to eat.

Boarfish, (family Caproidae),  are any of six species of fishes (order Zeiformes) characterized by red coloration and a laterally compressed body that is as high as it is long. All six species live in deep marine waters, occurring in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The two genera, Antigonia and Capros, are placed in different subfamilies. A typical species, A. capros, reaches a length of about 18 cm (7 inches).

Boarfishes typically have three anal spines that are completely separated from the soft rays of the anal fin. When viewed from the side, boarfishes appear almost rhomboid, or diamond-shaped, owing to the angular profiles of their backs.

    Draketail Workboat Drawing

This Draketrail workboat drawing by Russ Ormeis a great example of American-made artwork. We have found Russ Orme doing one of a kind “Pen And Ink On Oak” drawings in the Eastern Shores of Maryland. This Draketrail Workboat Drawing by Russ Orme measures 11 1/4 X 24 inches. The camera will never pick up the true detail of these very interesting pieces. Be sure to click on the photo to see some additional close up images. This piece is artist signed by Russ Orme.

The “Hooper’s Island Draketail” was named after the small island located in the lower half of the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland’s Eastern shore. In the early 1900’s, when the internal combustion engine first appeared, watermen were trading the sailing rigs for the engines and the local boat builders were looking for new ways to build better and more efficient workboats. One such builder noticed the torpedo boat destroyers pass by his home, and he thought that the hull design would be good for a workboat. He copied the hull design and built a boat with a V-bottom. The boat was fast, good looking and because of the narrow beam and sleek lines, it was relatively inexpensive to build.
The design caught on and the boats sprang up everywhere. The boat acquired the name “draketail” because the stern resembled the back of a duck’s tail. A few years later, a new box stern type became popular, and the draketail became old fashioned. Eventually, the full name was shortened and now most people only know them by the name “ducktail”. Today, not many of these beautiful boats exist. But through the passage of time, the boat has become a classic.

This small carved Snook on rough cut cypress wood measures 24 inches long and about 12 inches tall. The thickness of this piece of carved wood is about 2 inches.

The common snook is an estuarine-dependent fish species. Within estuaries, juvenile common snook are most often found inhabiting areas such as coastal wetland ponds, island networks, and creeks. Despite being a euryhaline species of fish, common snook do show a tendency to gravitate towards lower salinity conditions in the early stages of their life. By being able to adapt and thrive in both high and low salinity conditions through osmoregulation, common snook display a high level of habitat plasticity. Common snook are opportunistic predators whose feeding habits indicate that there is a positive relationship between their size and the size of their prey, meaning that as the snook grows it feeds on larger and larger prey. Common snook have been found to occasionally engage in cannibalistic activities, though this behavior is rare. This usually occurs during the winter months when adult and juvenile common snook are in close proximity to one another within their estuarine habitats. This form of cannibalism where the juveniles are fed on by the adults is referred to as intercohort cannibalism. The adult common snook who do cannibalize juveniles most likely target them due to the fact that the juveniles may be the largest of the available prey, and are therefore more nutritionally efficient to prey upon.

Pen and Ink Seahorse Drawing by Russ Orme

    Price: $85.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of the Seahorse drawing by American Artist Russ Orme.

We found Russ Orme on the Eastern Shores of Maryland. His Seahorse drawing is titled “Seahorse With Child”. This wonderful pen and ink seahorse drawing is done on oak and measures 11 X 24 inches. The seahorse drawing is signed by the artist.

This artwork is freehand style, so no two are just alike.

The technique of the pen and ink drawing is vastly different from that of any work the artists does. The work done with a pen is consequently very unique. By nature it is a much harsher and a less flexible instrument than either the pencil or the brush, even though pens have come a long way. A pen drawing has a distinct individuality, no matter what kind of a technique is used, fundamentally because of the manner of getting the various tones and shadows, which is different from that in the other mediums generally used.

Marlin fishing is considered by many anglers to be the pinnacle of offshore sport fishing, due to the size, power and elusiveness of the four marlin species. Fishing for marlin has captured the imagination of sport fishermen since the 1930s, when well-known angler/authors Zane Grey, who fished for black, striped, and blue marlin in the Pacific, and Ernest Hemingway, who fished the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and Cuba for Atlantic blue marlin and white marlin, wrote extensively about their pursuit and enthused about the sporting qualities of their quarry.

A lot of resources are committed to the construction of private and charter billfishing boats to participate in the billfishing tournament circuit. These vessels have the range, speed, and seaworthiness to reach distant offshore fishing grounds. They are often built to luxury standards and equipped with many technologies to ease the life of the deep sea recreational fisherman, including outriggers, flying bridges and fighting chairs, and state of the art fishfinders and navigation electronics.

Otherwise known as Mahi-mahi, the original name causes many to mistake them for the porpoise or dolphin – think “Flipper”.  This is not so as Mahi-mahi is a fish, not a mammal as is the porpoise.  Mexican and Latin American dolphin are called “Dorado”.  Mahi-mahi often gather in large schools attracted to floating objects such as logs and buoys where they find smaller fish to feed on. They are surface feeders and are found throughout the Pacific and tropical waters world wide. Hawaiian Mahi-mahi is regarded as some of the highest quality in the world with fish over 15 pounds in size being preferred. Reclaimed Barn Wood Framed Brook Trout

    Price: $110.00 $95.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this barn wood framed Brook Trout.

This is a very nice reclaimed barn wood framed Brook Trout piece of fish art.  The image is a fine giclee print on canvas from an original oil painting.  The piece measures 21 1/4 inches x 11 3/8 inches.  The back is covered with black kraft paper and has a saw tooth hanger.

Native to the Eastern United States, the brook trout is also known as a speckled trout, a spotted trout, a brookie, or a squaretail. Considered an indicator species, they help show the health of the water. Large groups of trout indicate that the environment in which they inhabit is healthy. A decline in the population is usually a sign of a deteriorating habitat and unsanitary water.

The size of a brook trout is significantly smaller than other trout species. Their size greatly depends on the condition of their habitat, such as the water temperature and food sources. On average, brook trout grow to about 10 inches and weigh about one pound, but those found in lakes usually grow larger, and sea trout grow even bigger. However overall, their short lifespan and slow growth rates contribute to their commonly small size.

We have several more examples of beautiful fish art in this category – just scroll up or down to view the photos and descriptions.

Speckled Trout, also known as “speck”, is a very important game fish in the Gulf of Mexico as well as the Atlantic Ocean. Speckled Trout are easy to identify. Barn Wood Framed Brown Trout Artwork

    Price: $110.00 $95.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of this barn wood framed Brown Trout artwork.

This barn wood framed Brown Trout artwork would make a fine gift. This brown trout is created with oil paint on on canvas. This framed brown trout measures 21 1/4 x 11 3/8 inches.  The back is covered with black kraft paper and has a saw tooth hanger.

The brown trout is a European species of salmonid fish that has been widely introduced into suitable environments globally. It includes both purely freshwater populations and some saltwater forms known as the sea trout.

The fish is not considered to be endangered, although, in some cases, individual stocks are under various degrees of stress mainly through habitat degradation, overfishing, and artificial propagation leading to introgression. Increased frequency of excessively warm water temperatures in high summer causes a reduction in dissolved oxygen levels which can cause “summer kills” of local populations if temperatures remain high for sufficient duration and deeper/cooler or fast, turbulent more oxygenated water is not accessible to the fish. This phenomenon can be further exacerbated by eutrophication of rivers due to pollution—often from the use of agricultural fertilizers within the drainage basin.

Pumpkinseeds typically are 4 in in length, but can grow up to 16 in. They typically weigh less than 1 pound with the world record being 1 pound 6 ounces . They are orange, green, yellow or blue in color, with speckles over their sides and back and a yellow-orange breast and belly. The coloration of the ctenoid scales of the pumpkinseed is one of the most vibrant of any freshwater fish and can range from an olive-green or brown to bright orange and blue. The sides are covered with vertical bars that are a faint green or blue, which are typically more prevalent in female pumpkinseeds. Orange spots may cover the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins and the cheeks have blue lines across them. The pumpkinseed is noted for the orange-red spot on the margin of its black gill cover. The pectoral fins of a pumpkinseed can be amber or clear, while the dorsal spines are black. Pumpkinseeds have a small body that is shaped much like that of a pumpkinseed, giving them their common name. They have a small mouth with an upper jaw stopping right under the eye.
