    E. S. Ritchie & Sons Mark IV Projector Binnacle

    Price: $1,800.00

Click on the photos to see additional views of this E. S. Ritchie & Sons Mark IV Projector Binnacle.

The compass glass is 8 1/2 inches wide. The gimbal ring is 12 inches. Measuring the outside gimbal ring pins from outside edge to outside edge, it measures 13 1/4 inches. The liquid-filled compass has a larger bubble than usual, but remains fully functional. The compass card is marked “RITCHIE U.S.A.” Two non-original lights were added to this binnacle, one in the helmet and the other in the main housing, each with its own electrical cord. These lights are not original, but functional and make for a beautiful, well lit compass.

The powder-coated aluminum housing measures 52 1/2 inches tall, 33 inches wide, and 14 1/2 inches in diameter.  The helmet glass measures 8 1/2 inches wide and the red and green powder-coated steel balls measure 6 inches wide. The calibrating tube on the rear of the binnacle has the original cap, which is extremely rare.

Marked: “MARK IV PROJECTOR BINNACLE  MFG. BY E.S. RITCHIE & SONS INC. PEMBROKE MASSACHUSETTS  SERIAL NO. P. 104”

This projector binnacle will be shipped disassembled in several boxes.

Large Floating Compass With Original Box

    Price: $400.00

Click on the photos to see additional views of this large floating compass with original box.

This is a very nice large floating compass with original box made by Iver C. Weilbach & Co. A/S, Copenhagen.

The outside box measures 15 inches by 13 3/4 inches and is 8 inches tall; it weighs almost 33 pounds.

This large floating compass with original box is fully functional. The gimbal ring measures about 12 1/2 inches in diameter with the compass being 10 5/8 inches in diameter. The compass is brass and has a weathered finish.

A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic cardinal directions, or “points”. Usually, a diagram called  a compass rose, which shows the directions north, south, east, and west as abbreviated initials marked on the compass. When the compass is used, the rose can be aligned with the corresponding geographic directions, so, for example, the “N” mark on the rose really points to the north. Frequently, in addition to the rose or sometimes instead of it, angle markings in degrees are shown on the compass. North corresponds to zero degrees, and the angles increase clockwise, so east is 90 degrees, south is 180, and west is 270.

You will be shipped this large floating compass with original box shown in the photos.

    Cassens and Plath Magnetic Compass

    Price: $450.00

Click on the photo to see additional views of the Cassens and Plath magnetic compass.

This is an original liquid filled Cassens and Plath magnetic compass. The compass housing is 9 5/8 inches wide and about 5 inches tall. The gimbal ring is 11 1/2 inches wide. The compass is fully functional but looks to read several degrees off from a true North position. The liquid has a large bubble. The wooden box was made by us and makes a perfect display case. The wood box measures 16 x 16 inches and about 9 1/2 inches tall. This item weighs about 40 pounds.

Many types of fluid have been used over the years to fill liquid-damped compasses, such as this Cassens and Plath magnetic compass.  The presence of fluid acts to damp the horizontal circular oscillation of a compass card and allows the card to settle on north much faster than air-damped compasses.  Liquid-damped compasses traditionally have a floating compass dial that turns instead of a moving needle supported over a fixed card – but occasionally you will see exceptions.

This beautiful Cassens and Plath magnetic compass is indeed one of those nautical treasures that will add the final touch to your nautical collection.

An engine order telegraph or E.O.T,  was a device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 19th century until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches (~20 centimetres) in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. There would also be a revolutions per minute indicator, worked by a hand crank.

Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to “ring” the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a “bell,” for example the order for a ship’s maximum speed, flank speed.
