While we have other antique Russian alarm bells, this isn’t exactly like our others. The plate on the front of the bell is slightly different than our other bells but still served the same purpose, nonetheless. These bells would have been installed in various places on ships to notify crew about different dangerous situation that could possibly arise. One famous alarm ring would be 7 short alarm rings followed by 1 long alarm ring to signal a fire on the ship.
This is a vintage alarm bell with a small plate-face containing Russian characters that we have not been able to translate. The housing is made of aluminum, while the bell and handle are made of iron. This alarm bell weighs 4.5 pounds. It measures about 10.5 inches long x about 5.5 inches wide at its widest part. It will extend out from the mounting surface by about 3.5 inches.
Working condition is not known. We have had customers report to us that they’ve restored this alarm to ring once again. Overall good condition with some surface wear from actual use on a vessel.
