This fascinating piece is an authentic Norwegian Chadburns electric telegraph. It was manufactured in the United Kingdom sometime between the 1930s and 1940s. Telegraphs are used for communication between the bridge or pilothouse and the engine control room. This item is perfect for the collector or as a unique conversation piece.
This Square pedestal solid brass engine order telegraph has a twin handle design. The faceplate is black with the Chadburns logo and commands in white. The Logo is on the front under the handle it reads: Chadburns Electric Telegraph Pat No.S 347177 347294 488604. The commands are in Norwegian (Akterover/Forover: Full, Halv, Sakte, Ganske Sakte, Vel, Stopp,Klar, Ganske Sakte, Sakte, Halv, Full). The cutouts in the face would have been illuminated when hooked up to an electric supply. Which has been outfitted with and an electrical cord, toggle switch for on-off, and a light on each side of the faceplate.
It measures 46 inches tall by 13 inches wide. The square base has 8 mount holes and measures 14 by 14 inches. The face measures 16 inches in diameter with the glass measuring 14 inches in diameter. The dual brass control arms measure 13 inches. The telegraph has not been weighted yet. The brass housing has been left with its natural patina, leaving the option open for you to polish it if preferred.
