This authentic large rectangle brass porthole Lot A is one example of several portholes we recently recovered from a shipyard in the Great Lakes Region of the US. I have several portholes of this design, but I will be listing them one by one so you can see and select the porthole you will be shipped.

This large rectangle porthole has a total weight of 66 pounds. The outside frame measures 20 1/4 by 28 1/4 inches. The original glass measures 15 3/4 by 23 1/2 inches. The flange on the back side of this porthole measures 16 7/8 by 25 1/2 inches, and it extends out from the frame by just a little less than one inch.

The original glass is free of any cracks but does have minor surface wear and minor scratches. This porthole was polished, but I would not consider it a fresh polish job. The paint has is all gone, but the brass surfaces have taken on a weathered look. With a little elbow grease and some polishing compound you could bring back the shine if that is the desired look you are after.

The closure dogs on this porthole have a very unique design. The shape of the closure dogs is one aspect that you need to focus in on. When was the last time you seen a closure dog shaped like this? Now, for the most unique part of the closure dog design is the fact that the closures operate from the back side of the window. Think about it, most porthole designs have the closure dogs on the front side of the window. With this design, you can have the look of the brass porthole on the outside wall, and have the opening and closure dogs on the inside of the wall. It truly is a very rare design, and opens up the door for a variety of different and functional uses.
