This U.S.T.S Charleston Plaque honors the history of the training ship of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Charleston had this duty between the years of 1948 and 1957. It was originally one of the only two Erie class patrol gunboats built for the US Naval Service during the 1930s. It was designed like a small cruiser – built to protect American lives and property all around the world. The Charleston served for about 11 years between 1937 and 1948 in the U.S. Navy before retiring to train new seamen up in Massachusetts.
