The stunning United States Nantucket Lightship 112 Replica pays homage to a historic lightship that once served as a floating lighthouse along the east coast of the United States with distinction. In 1936, shipbuilders Pusey & Jones of Wilmington, Delaware, constructed the magnificent Lightship 112 for $300,956.00, which the British government covered as compensation for the collision between the Olympic and Lightship 117 that claimed lives.
During World War II, the crew of Lightship 112 removed the vessel from its post at the Nantucket Shoals station and deployed it as an examination station in Portland, Maine. However, on January 5th, 1959, a violent storm battered the ship, blowing it 80 miles off-station and leaving it incommunicado for several days due to water-damaged electronics. Despite this setback, Lightship 112 surpassed all other lightships assigned to the Nantucket Shoals station, serving for an impressive 39 years.
Lightship 112, the largest lightship ever built in the United States, underwent renovation and preservation in Boston on May 10, 2010. Today, this tiny replica is displayed in a case and boasts excellent condition, making it an excellent addition to any nautical collection. It stands as a proud reminder of our maritime heritage and the courage of those who served aboard such vessels.
