Product Description
You are looking at a Heavy Liberty Ship Hatch Cover Coffee Table. This item we received from a man who lives in Chicago and was a collector of these liberty hatch covers for many years. It has been “finished” to avoid ruining the wood and give it a better look.
You maybe be wondering what a liberty hatch cover is. Liberty hatch covers (door) are the last true wooden hatch covers that were made specifically for the Liberty Ships in World War II. These were built into the floors of the ship. Liberty ships were built to be used as workhorses during the war, and only 2710 of these ships were built to serve this purpose.
On this table, you will see where you would grab the handles to lift the hatch open.. The table legs as well were made out of the liberty hatch covers and also have brass handles on them.
This is an exceptional, solid piece of workmanship that would be a talking piece for years to come!
