You are looking at a Liberty Ship Hatch Cover End Table. This item we received from a man who lives in Chicago and was a collector of these liberty hatch covers for many years.
You maybe be wondering what a liberty hatch cover is. Liberty hatch covers (door) are the last true wooden hatch covers that were made specifically for the Liberty Ships in World War II. These were built into the floors of the ship. Liberty ships were built to be used as workhorses during the war, and only 2710 of these ships were built to serve this purpose.
On this specific end table, you will see where you would have grabbed the handle to lift the hatch cover open. The legs are made out of iron, painted black. Some of the black paint is coming off the legs. There is also a shelf where you can place books/ magazines under the table.
So, if you are looking for an exceptional, vintage, solid piece of workmanship then this piece is for you!
