You are looking at the Benjamin F. Fairless-Steel Great Lakes Bulk Freighter Photo. The Benjamin F. Fairless was named after Benjamin Franklin Fairless by the Pittsburgh Steamship Company in 1942. Benjamin was born on May 3, 1890, and passed away from pleurisy on January 1, 1962. He was an American steel company executive and was president of a wide range of steel companies during a turbulent and formative period in the American steel industry. His roles included President of Central Alloy Steel from 1928 to 1930; First Vice President of Republic Steel(which had absorbed Central Steel) from 1930 to 1935; President of the Carnegie Illinois Steel Company from 1935 to 1938; and then President (1938–1955), and later CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors (1952–1955) of US Steel the largest steel corporation in the United States.

The Steel Great Lakes bulk freighter-Benjamin F. Fairless was built at Lorain Ohio by American Ship Building Co., Hull 824, and was launched on April 25, 1942. It was eventually laid up in Oct 1982 at Duluth MN and did not operate again. It was later sold for scrap in 1988 to Marine Salvage Ltd., Port Colborne ON.
