A 4 blade antique brass ship propeller is always a great find, especially if it is in brass. This piece is solid brass and measures 24 inches in total diameter. And it measures 12 inches from the center of the hub to the edges of the blades. The hub is 3 inches in diameter, and 4 inches from front to back. This is a vintage brass propeller, pulled from a real ship. Both sides are photographed. This authentic brass ship propeller weighs just under 37 pounds.
Simply speaking, a maritime propeller is made up of sections of helicoidal surfaces which act together ‘screwing’ through the water (hence the common reference to marine propellers as “screws”). Three, four, or five blades are most common in marine propellers, although designs which are intended to operate at reduced noise will have more blades. The blades are attached to a boss, or hub, which should be as small as the needs of strength allow – with fixed-pitch propellers the blades and boss are usually a single casting.

Click on the photo for additional views of this wind gauge anemometer.
This is an antiques maritime wind gauge anemometer with a nautical propeller that was salvaged from a vessel destined to be cut up for scrap at one of the shipbreaking yards. The propeller for sale is aluminum, the tail cone is fiber, and most of the rest of the unit is brass. The aluminum propeller has four blades and measures 13 1/2 inches tip to tip. From the ground to the top of the tail this wind gauge anemometer measures 30 inches tall. From the front tip to the back of the tail it measures 27 inches. The base mount is 6 inches wide with 5 mount holes. The propeller turns freely. The unit spins 360 degrees on the mount pipe. This wind gauge anemometer weighs about 35 pounds.
By definition, a windmill anemometer is similar to its namesake, the windmill, in that it must be parallel to the direction of the wind in order to work properly. A wind vane, attached to the tail of the anemometer, is pushed around until the propeller is facing into the wind. The wind then turns the propeller, which rotates a mechanism that calculates the wind speed.
We have not determined if this wind gauge anemometer works or not, but regardless, it will make a unique display item in your home or outside in your yard or garden area.
You will be shipped the vintage wind gauge anemometer shown in the photos.
