This is an authentic 1949 Sculler Lifesaving Gun. Most of us would really call this a cannon or sorts, but it is really called a gun. The black barrel measures about 28 inches long with the small end measuring 3 5/8 inches wide. I think most of you reading this know more about it than I do, but I will point out a few items you need to know. This gun is missing the firing mechanism that screwed into the breach hole. The original pin that holds the barrel at the desired angle is missing, and has been replaced with a 1/2 inch piece of standard rebar. The inside of the barrel has surface rust. Not that I think you should every fire this devise, but I am sure the surface rust inside the barrel would be greatly reduced if fired once.

For those of you that still are not sure what this item is, or what it was used for, I will share some knowledge. This is a lifesaving devise that would fire a metal slug that was attached to a rope. It would be fired over a sinking vessel with a small rope attached. The smaller rope was used to pull over a larger rope. The large rope would allow a basket to slide people from the sinking vessel to safety. Yes, there is a lot more to it, but I think you get the point.

This historical item came from the estate of Leroy Sayers. I have enjoyed it for a few years, now it is time for someone else to enjoy it!
