Description
This vintage ship compass comes from Iver C. Weilbach & Co. A/S of Copenhagen, Denmark. It sits inside a fitted wooden storage box built for transport and protection.
The compass uses a gimbaled mount to stay level as a vessel moves. Because of this, it provided consistent readings in rough conditions. Mariners relied on this design for dependable navigation at sea.
The compass card shows a full 360-degree scale with clear directional markings. You can easily read cardinal and intercardinal points across the dial. At the center, the maker’s mark is still visible, although part of it has worn down over time. The liquid-filled bowl helps control needle movement, so readings remain steady.
Construction:
The metal gimbal frame supports the compass and allows it to move freely within its housing. As a result, the compass maintains its position without manual adjustment. The liquid inside the bowl further stabilizes the needle during use.
Meanwhile, the wooden case holds the compass securely in place with a fitted interior. It also includes a handle and metal latches for easy handling and storage. Surface wear is visible throughout, which reflects its age and use.

- Gimbaled mount keeps the compass level during ship movement
- Manufactured by Iver C. Weilbach & Co., Copenhagen
