Description
This vintage nautical sextant was built by Cassens & Plath in West Germany. Often referred to as a Trommel Sextant or Freiberger Drum Sextant, it uses a drum-style control system and a full-view horizon mirror for precise celestial readings. The arc bears clear markings, including “Cassens & Plath” and “Made in West Germany,” confirming its authenticity.
Along with the instrument, you’ll receive three original calibration certificates. These documents show accuracy checks and make this piece even more attractive for collectors. While it’s fully functional, many also value it for its craftsmanship and historical value.
It comes packed in the original wooden storage case, which includes a working brass handle. One corner of the lid has splintered — visible in the photos — but the case remains sturdy and secure. Although the box shows its age, it still protects the instrument well.
Whether you’re collecting maritime gear or just want a display piece with history, this vintage nautical sextant offers both function and character.
