You are looking at the Vintage Brass Sestrel Compass that was taken from a ship for scraps. The reason that this compass is so small is that it was designed to be taken on lifeboats in case of an emergency. When preparing to abandon the boat, the large binnacle with a compass can’t be deconstructed. Instead, the crew will grab a portable compass to help the lifeboat find its way to safety.
The compass itself gimbals freely inside the housing. On the compass rim you will see the word Sestrel and the numbers 909035 and 90583. Underneath the N for North you will see that same number 909035. The housing for the compass is in great shape but the rim is very weathered as shown in the photos. This just gives this item character!
This item is perfect for someone who doesn’t mind the little imperfections on this compass. A great piece for a collector who is looking for an authentic, vintage item!
