Description

This vintage brass lifeboat compass served as a navigation tool aboard a working vessel. It was built for lifeboat use, where clear directional readings were essential.

The solid brass housing shows patina and surface scratches from time at sea. These marks reflect real use rather than decorative aging. The compass sits in a gimbal mount, which keeps it level as it moves. As a result, the compass remains readable even when the vessel shifts.

Inside, the compass still holds liquid and responds to movement. The directional markings are clear, and you can easily read each letter on the card. The face also shows the name “Sestrel,” a British company known for producing marine compasses throughout the 20th century. They supplied equipment for both commercial and naval ships, focusing on function and durability.

On one side of the housing, there is a small compartment where the oil chamber was originally stored. However, the oil chamber is no longer present. Even so, the compartment structure and door remain in place.

Overall, this piece retains its core function and structure. It works well for display, especially in collections focused on navigation or ship equipment.

  • Gimbaled mount that keeps the compass level
