The sextant accurately determines a ship’s location at sea by measuring angles between celestial bodies—like the sun, moon, and stars—and the horizon.

The photos show that the sextant includes a clamp, micrometer drum, sun shades, index mirror, focusing eyepiece, and the arc. You’ll also find a cleaning cloth, brush, adjusting wrench, vial of oil, and instructions, as well as a checklist for coordinates on a sheet of paper.

The box lid contains taped instructions for using the sextant and features a handle for easy carrying.
