Description
This Salvaged Nautical Brass Sestrel Lifeboat Compass came from a working vessel and retains strong maritime character. Sestrel, a respected British marine instrument maker, produced reliable compasses widely used on merchant ships and lifeboats throughout the 20th century. The compass face clearly shows the Sestrel name along with the serial number No. B4/6188L/47, which adds authenticity and collector interest.
The brass binnacle features a protective hood that shields the compass from weather, glare, and vibration during lifeboat navigation. In addition, a small hinged compartment stores the original oil reserve used to illuminate the compass at night. This detail reflects practical lifeboat design where dependable low-light visibility remained essential. The stained wood base also provides stable support for display in maritime collections or nautical interiors.
Because of its compact size and distinctive form, this compass works well in offices, lake houses, restaurants, and coastal homes. Moreover, it serves as a strong display piece for collectors interested in navigation history and shipboard instruments. The brass can be polished for a brighter appearance, although many collectors prefer to preserve the existing marine patina for authenticity.
