Description
This nautical brass lifeboat compass was made by Kelvin & Hughes in England, a well-known maker of marine navigation instruments. It is a solid brass unit with a gimbaled compass that still moves freely inside the housing, as intended for use at sea.
The brass housing shows natural patina from age and use. This can be left as-is for a more original look or polished if a cleaner finish is preferred. The outer glass has visible scratching near the bottom section, and the compass card lettering is dark, which makes it harder to read compared to a fully restored example.
On the side, there is an oil chamber door, which remains intact. These chambers were used for nighttime illumination, allowing sailors to read compass headings in low light conditions. This is a functional detail that reflects how the piece was used onboard working vessels.
This compass works well as a display piece or as part of a nautical collection. The gimbal movement, maker mark, and original structure all add to its value as a salvaged marine instrument. It’s also a practical option for anyone looking for authentic ship equipment rather than reproduction items.
