You are looking at the Vintage Brass Compass that was taken from a ship for scraps. The reason that this compass is so small is that it was designed to be taken on lifeboats in case of an emergency. When preparing to abandon the boat, the large binnacle with a compass can’t be deconstructed. Instead, the crew will grab a portable compass to help the lifeboat find its way to safety.
The compass itself gimbals freely inside the housing. The glass on the face is not the best. It does have some scratches and some specks on it. The side of the compass does have a small window and that has a crack in it (shown in photo). The brass on this is in great shape!
This item is perfect for someone who doesn’t mind the little imperfections on this compass. A great piece for a collector who is looking for an authentic, vintage item!
