This is great rare piece to add to your nautical collection! A full-sized C. Plath binnacle with a C. Plath magnetic Compass with gimbaled bracket. The front brass plaque is marked C.Plath Hamburg. The C.Plath company was originally founded in Hamburg in 1837, around that time they concentrated on the manufacture of sextants, magnetic compasses, binnacles and barometers.
The binnacle measures 58″ tall by 15″ across. The wood base is 21” by 21” square. The weight approximately 147 lbs. There are two iron correcting spheres mounted to each side on flinders bars that measure about 2.5 feet from end to end. The brass hood is 10 ½” tall by 15” wide, with a 5 ¼” circular viewing port. The octagonal pedestal has its original teak wood. The front of the pedestal has a small brass plate which says: C. Plath.
Compasses are an irreplaceable basic of every ship as they can function independently of electric power supply and satellite reception. This is an original liquid filled C. Plath magnetic compass.The Compass is mounted to the pedestal with a gimbaled bracket which allows the compass to sit flat while the vessel is moving. Marked on the outer ring of the compass housing is marked C. Plath Hamburg and TYPE No. 1298. The compass housing is 10 inches wide and about 4 ½” inches tall. The gimbal ring is 12 inches wide. This compass is fully functional.
