This listing is for a Brass and Aluminum Binnacle with a Japanese Compass. The compass was manufactured by Nunotani but the inclinometer on the front is broken – which would indicate the manufacturer of the binnacle. The spheres on this binnacle were re-painted red and green, which signify port and starboard direction.

The magnetic compass is a fundamental requirement of every ship as it can function independently of satellite reception and electrical supply. The balls on a binnacle are called correction spheres. The position of these spheres on either side of the binnacle help balances out interference from the ship’s hull. They allow the compass to point correctly to the magnetic north.
