Antique Maritime Compass, Box with Mounting Bracket

This is an antique maritime compass, brass box housing with a mounting bracket to show where it was displayed back in the day. There is no manufacturer name on the compass, housing, or the compass card. However, it looks like the compass card is made of metal? This is odd.

The story for how Dr. William Squires acquired this goes as follows “I went up in the hills of Europe to a stranger’s house… I got the address from an antique dealer. It was my birthday, 1978, and I rented a car in Europe for the first time so that I could drive up there to buy it.”
