This vintage starboard ship navigation light dates to around 1910 and was produced by Geo. B. Carpenter & Co. in Chicago. The lantern features a galvanized steel housing, brass ventilator top, and its original blue Fresnel glass lens. Starboard lights mark a vessel’s right side and display green illumination; therefore, this lantern used a blue Fresnel lens paired with a warm-toned bulb to achieve the correct color.
During the transition from oil to early electric ship lighting, Geo. B. Carpenter & Co. supplied durable marine lanterns for commercial vessels. As a result, examples like this represent some of the earliest electrically designed navigation lights used at sea. The lantern shows authentic marine wear, including oxidation, surface marks, and age-related patina. Additionally, the original maker’s plate remains present, although years of service have softened its detail.
The Fresnel lens retains its originality but shows a visible crack. Furthermore, the lower internal section, which once supported the electrical assembly, is missing. Because of this, the lantern works best as a restoration piece, collector display, or nautical accent suitable for coastal homes, restaurants, offices, and maritime-themed interiors.
This lantern remains in its original, salvaged condition with visible service wear and oxidation. The Fresnel lens has a crack, and the internal lower electrical section is missing. The light has not been polished or restored, preserving its authentic maritime appearance.
This light will arrive unwired and in as-found condition. However, wiring can be discussed if you prefer a ready-to-install fixture. Please contact us before purchase to explore available wiring options.
