This is a vintage Nippon Sento port double Fresnel lens navigation light – red side Masthead light, salvaged from a once working vessel. Navigation lights are an iconic item in the nautical community. Red and green sidelights are required when away from the dock between sunset and sunrise and periods of restricted visibility. This particular navigation light is a red sidelight. It would be located on the side left of the bow with 112.5 degree visibility.
It is Japanese made in the 1980s by Nippon Sento Co. Ltd. Nippon Sento Co. Ltd. is a marine supplier that has been providing lighting equipment for ships and airports since 1936.
This double-stacked light is made of solid brass and copper. It measures 17.50 inches tall by 11 inches long (including the metal sticking out of the sides) and 8.5 inches wide. The base measures 9 inches by 9.5 inches including the mount leg, it has 1 mount hole. This double light weighs 10.2 pounds.
The clear Fresnel lenses are in good condition, with minor chips and scratches. There is a red sliding glass insert behind the upper fresnel lens. The red insert rotates on the interior to be hidden so the light can shine clear as well. Each Fresnel lens is 5.5 inches high.
We have left this light in the unwired condition that it came to us in. To access the interior, on the top or bottom, loosens the screw and slide the lid off.
