Description
This vintage H.L. Piper galvanized steel ship lantern comes from a Hudson Transport vessel and remains a true piece of maritime history. Made from galvanized steel, this ship lantern was built to withstand harsh sea conditions. Its clear Fresnel glass lens helped ships improve visibility in low-light environments.
In addition, the lantern still holds its original oil chamber, making it a rare find for collectors who appreciate authentic nautical lighting in its unrestored form. Because of this, it serves as both a historical artifact and a functional display piece.
Sailors once used this galvanized steel ship lantern to signal their vessel’s status. The “NUC” (Not Under Command) plate alerted nearby ships that the vessel could not maneuver, so they needed to adjust their course.
Moreover, this ship lantern includes a protective wire guard, a hinged access panel, and a sturdy carrying handle. These features made it a practical and durable piece for shipboard use.
Over time, the lantern developed a rich patina, showing its long service at sea. As a result, each lantern has its own unique character, making it a great addition to any nautical lighting collection.
