Description
This salvaged Papa nautical signal flag came from a vessel dismantled for scrap. It measures approximately 64″ x 52″ and remains in original, unwashed condition.
The white sections are heavily soiled to the point that they no longer appear white. This level of discoloration comes from long-term exposure at sea. The flag also shows structural wear, including frayed rope at both ends and metal grommets for mounting. At the top edge, where the rope passes through, there is visible tearing in the fabric.
In maritime use, the Papa flag (Letter “P”) carried clear signals. In port, it meant “All personnel report on board. The vessel is about to proceed to sea.” At sea, it warned nearby ships: “Your lights are out or burning badly.” These signals helped crews respond quickly and avoid hazards.
This piece works well for display in a boathouse, coastal interior, or as part of a maritime collection. The wear reflects real ship use and gives it a direct connection to working vessels.
