This Walker’s Cherub Mark III Ship Taffrail Log and Spinner by Thomas Walker and Son Ltd. Birmingham England is in excellent condition. This Walkers “Cherub” Mark III came off of a Kinsmen Fleet Great Lakes freighter owned by the Steinbrenner family and has been in a private collection for many years.
Taffrail log spinners helped determine vessel speed at sea. It was one of the first logs in which the recorder was placed on board the ship rather than being part of the rotor.
This brass taffrail log spinner measures about 14 inches long by 5 inches wide, 47 inches long counting the rope tether. The taffrail is marked T.W. CHERUB, T.Walker & Sons LTD. Birmingham, England. The brass ship log measures 5″ tall when horizontal, It is 9 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide. The face dial measures 3 inches diameter. The face of the ship log is marked “Walkers “Cherub” Mark III” Patenteded and made in England by Thos Walker &son Ltd. Birmingham.
The both pieces together weigh just around 10.5 pounds.
