Description
This vintage rotary light switch comes from a marine or industrial setting where reliability mattered. Hoppmann & Mulsow manufactured this unit in Western Germany, and the company also worked alongside Wiska on similar electrical components.
The solid brass body shows heavy wear and patina across the surface. Over time, exposure to harsh conditions left clear marks that reflect its working life. As a result, the surface now carries consistent aging throughout. The rotary knob uses bakelite, an early plastic known for heat resistance and electrical insulation. However, the knob shows chipping and wear from long-term use.
This switch includes a watertight design that protects internal wiring in demanding environments. In addition, the dual conduit entries allow secure cable routing in marine and industrial installations. Because of this, installers could rely on it in exposed or wet conditions. The surface-mount form also makes installation straightforward in tight spaces.
Today, people reuse switches like this in industrial-style interiors. For that reason, the original wear and aged materials add character rather than requiring restoration. Instead of refinishing, most leave pieces like this as-is. This example remains in original condition and shows clear signs of use.
