Description
This vintage nautical barometer is a salvaged marine instrument originally used to measure atmospheric pressure and help predict weather changes at sea. Made by EIWA (Sanoh Instrument Co., Japan), this aneroid barometer does not require liquid to function. Instead, it uses an internal mechanical system that reacts to air pressure changes, moving the dial to indicate rising or falling pressure.
On ships, barometers like this were used to monitor approaching storms or improving conditions. A steady drop in pressure typically signals worsening weather, while rising pressure suggests clearing skies. This example also includes an integrated temperature scale, adding another layer of environmental reference.
The brass housing shows consistent patina across the surface, with visible wear from age and use. The glass face is clear and intact with no cracks. We tested the movement and it responded, but accuracy has not been verified, so it should be considered a display piece first.
This piece is wall-mounted, with three mounting points on the base for secure installation. It works well in offices, studies, workshops, or any space with nautical or industrial decor. It can also be grouped with other ship instruments for a more complete display.
