Description

This vintage Eccles miners safety lamp comes from The Protector Lamp & Lighting Co. Ltd in Eccles, England. It’s a Type 6 model that miners used in coal mines where open flames had to stay controlled.

The lamp has a chrome-plated steel top, along with a brass base and a glass body protected by vertical bars. Overall, the construction is solid and practical, since it was built for daily underground use rather than display.

Instead of exposing the flame, this lamp keeps it enclosed behind a fine wire mesh. Because of that design, the mesh cools the flame and helps prevent gases like methane from igniting. In addition, most of these lamps included a magnetic lock and an internal striker, so workers could control when and how they opened or lit the lamp.

Miners used this style of lamp across the UK and Australia through the 1970s. Today, it no longer serves as safety equipment, but it still shows how this type of gear was made and used.

This example shows wear from use, especially around the base and lower section. You’ll see patina and surface marks throughout, but we cleaned it without refinishing anything. As a result, it still has its original look.

You can use it as a display piece, or you can convert it into a hanging light if needed.
