This is a stunning polished vintage oar lock set. An oar lock, sometimes rowlock, spur,or gate, is a support that attaches an oar to a boat. The oarlock acts as a fulcrum when the boat is rowed. The force that the rower applies on the water with the oar is transferred to the boat by the thrust force exerted on the oarlock. Originally, oar locks were two wooden posts or thole pins that the shaft of the oar went between. Single thole pins may be used when the oars have holes cut into the loom, which then sits over/around the thole pin.
This set of oar locks is solid brass. They are 8 inches in total length. The Shaft is 5 inches long with a 3/4 inch wide diameter. There is a 2.5 inch opening at the top and 3.5 inches at its widest point. Each Oar lock weights 1.4 pounds with a total weight of 2.8 pounds.
