Description
This nautical barometer comes from a working ship and was used to measure atmospheric pressure at sea. Wempe, a German company based in Hamburg, produced this piece. The company has built marine chronometers, clocks, and barometers since the early 1900s and still operates today.
The body is made from solid brass, and over time it has developed a heavy, even patina. As a result, the surface now shows a dark, aged finish across the entire case. However, the front glass remains in excellent condition with no cracks or scratches. In addition, the dial is clean and easy to read. It displays both numeric pressure readings and labeled zones such as rain, change, and fair.
To access the interior, you unscrew the knob on the right side and lift the front bezel. This design allowed crew members to adjust and maintain the instrument while at sea. Because of this, the barometer could be serviced without removing it from the wall.
The base measures approximately 7.25 inches in diameter, and the glass face measures 5 inches across. The barometer has not been tested and is being sold as-is. Still, it works well as a display piece or as a candidate for restoration.
