Description
This authentic Liberty Ship hatch cover is a genuine piece of maritime history. We’ve left it exactly as found. The surface shows aged, weathered wood, framed by steel bands on both ends. Two circular cutouts, reinforced with steel bars, serve as built-in handles.
The wood has splintered in several areas, and some gaps are visible between the planks. You can see these details clearly in the photos. While the hatch cover shows signs of heavy use, it remains solid and ready for a second life. Its unfinished condition makes it a strong base for restoration or custom projects.
Features:
- Material: Aged wood with steel bands at both ends
- Handles: Two round cutouts with steel bar reinforcements
- Condition: Unfinished, with visible plank gaps and splintering — ideal for creative reuse
Historical Note:
During World War II, Liberty ship hatch covers helped protect cargo on long and risky ocean runs. Designers focused on speed and durability. They built these covers from wood or steel and sealed them with tarps to keep out water.
After the war, many hatch covers found new use in civilian life. Today, they carry both history and practical value — perfect for anyone who appreciates wartime craftsmanship.
