You are looking at an Authentic Russian Sea Chronometer with a double handle nesting box.
The chronometers were invented by a man named John Harrison. He was a self-educated English carpenter and clockmaker who invented the marine chronometer. This device was used for solving the problem of calculating longitude while at sea. He revolutionized navigation and greatly increased the safety of long-distance sea travel.
This sea chronometer is in a nesting box made out of solid wood with a glass top. On the front of the box you will see the words MOPCKON XPOHOMTP, root-8916-20 which means NAUTICAL XPOHOMETPO , Guest 8916-20. Also, inside the box there is a piece of paper that is all in Russian that says Ministry of instrumentation, funds, automation and control systems, Sea Chronometer, and Technical description and operating instructions.
On the chronometer itself above the number 56 that word means descent and in that same area above the 0 that is the number 3800. By the hand dials those words say name Kirov.
This chronometer is being sold in as-is condition. It seems to be in proper working condition – but has not been serviced by a professional.
