Description

This brass ship tide clock tracks tidal movement rather than standard time. It features a solid brass case with visible patina from age and use. The glass face remains clear and in excellent condition, and the dial shows sharp, easy-to-read lettering.

The dial marks rising, falling, high tide, and low tide. As a result, mariners and coastal users relied on this type of clock for a quick reference to tidal conditions throughout the day.

A tide clock follows the lunar tidal cycle instead of a 24-hour day. Specifically, it runs on a cycle of about 12 hours and 25 minutes. The single hand moves continuously to show whether the tide is rising or falling. At the same time, it indicates how close the tide is to high or low. Once you set it to a local tide schedule, it continues to give a general reference without frequent adjustment.

This example no longer runs. It previously used a battery-powered movement, but the correct battery setup is unknown. Because of that, it works well as a repair project or as a display piece.

At 3.75 inches in diameter, it fits easily in smaller spaces. It also works well as part of a grouped wall display.
