This boxed Cassens and Plath ship taffrail log is a true vintage find. The box itself measures 13 1/4″ x 20″ x 7″ deep. It appears the maker’s name is on the lid.
The wood container has two taffrails with attached rope, a rotator wheel, a small can of solidified oil, and a Cassens and Plath brass ship log.
Each taffrail measures about 14 1/2″ long – 49″ long counting the rope tether. The rotator wheel measures 10″ in diameter. The ship log is marked and measures 5″ tall when horizontal. The face dial measures 3 1/8″ in diameter. A string tag is attached.
A taffrail log was a nautical instrument used to determine a vessel’s speed, or knots, through the water.
