These types of flare pistols were widely used by U.S. forces during World War I for signaling and firing parachute flares to illuminate the battlefield.

The Remington Mark III Flare Signal Pistol was originally designed for use in signaling at sea. The pistol has a sleek, streamlined appearance and is easy to handle, with a comfortable grip and a smooth trigger pull. It features a 9″ long tapered smooth-bore barrel made of iron, complemented by a brass frame and a two-piece plain walnut pistol grip. The frame has a large screw on its left side, which serves as the barrel release latch.
It is a single-shot signal pistol that is manually operated and hammer-fired, featuring a hinged barrel for loading. To load, the barrel is broken down in a shotgun style from a pintle hinge located under the front end of the barrel. The pistol does not come with mounted sights. To ensure a secure grip, there is non-slip checkering located on the thumb pull-back on the hammer and on the spur trigger.
The barrel is stamped with “MARK III – THE REMINGTON ARMS – UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. INC.” “REMINGTON BRIDGEPORT WORKS BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A.” It also has 17 – 133
